Why We Do What We Do

It is more blessed to give back than to receive.

We believe that one of the greatest joys in life is what we experience when we give of our time and resources to help others.

As Mother Teresa said, “Not all of us can do great things.  But we can do small things with great love.” Our goal is to share small acts of kindness with people who could never repay us, and to do so out of hearts of love. When we share a blanket, a sleeping bag, a hot meal, a pack of nutrition bars, a bottle of water, or a familiar song, we do it because we care.

“Everyone has the power for greatness, not for fame but greatness, because greatness is determined by service.”

― Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The most important part of what we do is building relationships. Mother Teresa pointed out, “Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.” We learn the people’s names and listen when they talk about whatever is on their heart. We show consistency by being there every week at the same time.

Those relationships are making a difference. We have helped homeless people find work, reunite with family, and even get into a residential drug rehabilitation program. Some have said they want to volunteer with us when they get back on their feet. We know that we will continue seeing changed lives. We live by these words of Mother Teresa: “Spread love everywhere you go.  Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” We are just blessed to give, for it is more blessed to give than to receive.
